How can a large university-adjacent district evolve while connecting the campus and the surrounding city?

At Southwood, the solution begins with establishing a clear, long-term urban framework to guide phased development. The plan organizes development parcels, streets, and public spaces into a coherent structure that supports gradual growth while strengthening connections between the University of Manitoba campus and surrounding neighbourhoods and maintaining existing feature elements, including large stands of trees and other green amenity spaces

Early planning focused on aligning land use, infrastructure capacity, and mobility networks within a flexible urban framework. Planning, architecture, and engineering disciplines worked collaboratively with the client's vision to develop a structure that provides clarity for immediate development while allowing the district to adapt as market conditions and fiscal realities evolve. Architectural modeling was intentionally designed to support this flexibility, acting as a catalyst for community formation. By structuring development around shared public spaces and accessible mobility networks, Southwood establishes the foundation for a district that can grow alongside the university while remaining integrated with the broader city.
